UK Visit Visa from Bangladesh: Requirements and Refusal Risks
A UK visit visa from Bangladesh is usually the Standard Visitor visa, allowing stays of up to six months. Approval depends on evidence: funds whose source is clear, real ties to Bangladesh, and a sponsor bundle that matches. This guide explains the rules, the application centre process and the refusal reasons we see most often.
Key pointThe size of a bank balance matters far less than whether the officer can see where the money came from. An unexplained deposit shortly before applying is one of the most common causes of refusal.
At a glance
Visa needed in advance
Bangladeshi citizens are visa nationals and must obtain a Standard Visitor visa before travelling; the earliest you can apply is three months before travel.
Fee and stay
GOV.UK lists the six-month Standard Visitor visa at £135, with long-term visas of two, five or ten years still limited to six months per visit.
Decision time
Applicants outside the UK usually receive a decision within three weeks of their biometrics appointment, according to GOV.UK, with paid faster services sometimes available.
Genuine visitor test
You must show you will leave, will not live in the UK through repeat visits, have a permitted purpose and can fund the trip without working.
No general appeal
Visit visa refusals carry no general right of appeal, so the answer is usually a better-evidenced fresh application or, exceptionally, judicial review.

UK visit visa from Bangladesh: the short answer
Bangladeshi citizens need a visa before they travel to the UK as tourists, to see family or for short business trips. A UK visit visa from Bangladesh is usually the Standard Visitor visa, which lets you stay for up to six months per visit. You apply online, give your fingerprints and photograph at a visa application centre in Bangladesh, and usually receive a decision within three weeks.
The application itself is simple. The difficulty is evidence. The Home Office officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine visitor: that you will leave at the end of the trip, that the purpose is one the rules allow, and that the visit can be paid for without working or claiming public funds. Most refusals we see turn on money that cannot be explained and ties to Bangladesh that are asserted rather than shown.
A visit visa is decided on the documents in the file. If the officer cannot see where the money came from, or why you will go home, the answer is usually no.

The legal framework: Appendix Visitor and the genuine visitor test
The rules for visitors sit in the Immigration Rules, in Appendix V: Visitor and its linked appendices on permitted activities. Bangladesh is a visa national country, so a Bangladeshi passport holder must obtain entry clearance before travelling, rather than asking for permission at the border.
What "genuine visitor" means
Paragraph V 4.2 of Appendix Visitor requires the applicant to satisfy the decision maker that they:
- will leave the UK at the end of the visit;
- will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK their main home;
- are genuinely coming for a purpose the Visitor route permits;
- will not undertake prohibited activities, such as working; and
- have sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit, including the return journey, without working or using public funds.
The burden is on the applicant. The officer does not have to prove you will overstay; you have to show, on the balance of probabilities, that you will not.
When a relative pays for the trip
Many visits from Bangladesh are funded by a son, daughter or sibling who lives in the UK. Paragraph V 4.3 allows this, but only where the third party has a genuine professional or personal relationship with the applicant, is not in breach of immigration law, and can and will support the visitor for the whole stay. That is why sponsor evidence matters as much as the applicant's own.
What visitors cannot do
According to GOV.UK, visitors cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as self-employed people (other than permitted engagements), claim public funds, live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, or marry or give notice of marriage. Marriage requires a separate Marriage Visitor visa. Anyone planning to settle with a British or settled partner needs a family visa, covered in our guide to the UK spouse visa from Bangladesh.
Choosing the right UK visit visa from Bangladesh
Most Bangladeshi applicants choose between a single six-month visa and a long-term visit visa. The fees below are those shown on GOV.UK as of October 2026; they change periodically, so check before paying.
| Visa | Fee | Validity | Maximum stay per visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Visitor | £135 | Up to 6 months | 6 months |
| Long-term visit (2 years) | £506 | 2 years | 6 months |
| Long-term visit (5 years) | £903 | 5 years | 6 months |
| Long-term visit (10 years) | £1,128 | 10 years | 6 months |
| Visitor for private medical treatment | £234 | Up to 11 months | 11 months |
A long-term visa is not a stronger form of permission. The officer applies the same genuine visitor test, but looks across the whole validity period. First-time applicants, or those whose travel history is thin, are usually better served by a standard six-month application. A refused long-term application costs more and still goes on your record.
The Standard Visitor route covers tourism, visiting family and friends, and many business activities such as meetings, negotiations and conferences. Business visitors should read the list of permitted activities closely. Doing productive work for a UK client, or filling a role in a UK company, is not allowed even if you are paid in Bangladesh.
How a UK visit visa from Bangladesh application works
The steps below reflect the GOV.UK process for applying from outside the UK. The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel.
- Fix the purpose and dates. Decide exactly why you are travelling, for how long and where you will stay. Vague plans are a common reason for doubt.
- Gather evidence of funds and ties. Collect bank records that show the origin of the money, employment or business documents, and family evidence from Bangladesh.
- Prepare the sponsor's bundle. If a UK relative is paying or hosting, assemble their invitation letter, status document, income and accommodation evidence.
- Translate Bengali documents. Every document not in English or Welsh needs a full, verifiable translation with the translator's confirmation, date, name, signature and contact details.
- Complete the online form. Answer every question accurately, including any past refusals, overstays or criminal matters. Pay the fee.
- Attend the visa application centre. Give fingerprints and a photograph and submit your documents at the appointment in Bangladesh, operated by the Home Office's commercial partner.
- Wait for the decision. GOV.UK says you will usually hear within three weeks. Paid faster decisions may be available.
- Check the vignette. When your passport comes back, check the dates, name and visa type before you book non-refundable travel.
A tuberculosis test is needed only if you are visiting for more than six months, for example on a medical treatment visa. The Home Office publishes a list of approved TB clinics in Bangladesh.
Financial evidence and ties to Bangladesh
The Home Office's guide to supporting documents for visitors is the best starting point for anyone assembling a UK visit visa from Bangladesh. It is guidance, not a checklist that guarantees success, but it signals what officers find useful.
Bank statements that tell a story
The guide asks for statements that show where the funds came from and that you have access to them. A large deposit shortly before the application, with no explanation, is one of the most common problems in applications from Bangladesh. If you sold land, received a family gift or moved savings from a fixed deposit (FDR), show the transaction trail and the source document.
Officers also compare the money with your stated income. A balance far above what your salary or business could plausibly generate invites questions. Consistency between your form, your employer's letter, your tax return and your bank records matters more than the size of the balance.
Proof of ties
Ties are the reasons you will return. Useful evidence includes an employer's letter on headed paper confirming your role, salary, length of service and approved leave; trade licence, tax and recent invoices for business owners; enrolment and leave letters for students; and evidence of property, a spouse and children remaining in Bangladesh. Previous passports showing trips to the UK, Schengen countries or elsewhere, and returns on time, also help.
Sponsor documents from the UK
Where a UK relative is supporting the trip, the guide suggests evidence of what support they will give, how, their ability to support themselves and their own dependants, your relationship, and their lawful presence in the UK. Payslips, bank statements, a tenancy or title document and a passport or eVisa record are typical. The guide notes that utility and council tax bills are not useful for this purpose.
Write a short cover letter that joins the dots: who is travelling, why, for how long, who is paying, where the money came from and why you will return. Officers read many files. A clear one-page explanation, with each document referenced, reduces the risk of a refusal based on misunderstanding.
An illustrative scenario
This example is illustrative only and does not describe a real client.
A retired government officer in Sylhet wants to visit his daughter in London for eight weeks after the birth of her first child. His pension is modest, but his daughter and her husband, both British citizens, will pay for the flights and host him. His first application, prepared by an agent, included three months of his bank statements showing a recent large deposit and a short invitation letter. It was refused because the officer was not satisfied the funds were his or that the costs were met.
For the second application, he explained the deposit with the land sale deed and the buyer's bank transfer, and his daughter provided her payslips, bank statements, tenancy and passport, with a letter setting out the costs she would meet. He enclosed his pension documents, evidence of his home and his wife remaining in Bangladesh, and a previous passport showing an earlier Schengen trip with a timely return. The second UK visit visa from Bangladesh application addressed each reason for refusal directly. That is the approach, though no outcome can be guaranteed.
Common refusal reasons and mistakes
Most refusals of a UK visit visa from Bangladesh fall into a handful of patterns. Each refusal letter lists the paragraphs of the rules the officer relied on. Read it carefully: the next application must answer those reasons, not simply add more paper.
Unexplained deposits and "funds parking"
Officers are familiar with money being borrowed and placed in an account to make a balance look stronger. If a large sum appears shortly before the application, the officer may conclude the funds are not genuinely available, or that the applicant has not been honest. Explain any significant credit with documents: a sale deed, a gift letter with the donor's own bank evidence, or a maturity certificate for a fixed deposit. If funds have been borrowed for the application, do not rely on them. A smaller balance that is clearly yours is far better than a large one that is not.
Weak or inconsistent evidence of employment
An employer's letter that does not match the salary credits on the bank statement, or a trade licence that has expired, undermines the whole application. Officers may check documents with issuing bodies. Make sure job titles, salaries and dates are consistent across the form, letters and statements. Self-employed applicants should show that the business is active, with tax returns, recent invoices and business account statements, not just a registration certificate.
False documents or undisclosed history
Using a false document, or failing to disclose a previous refusal, overstay or immigration breach, is treated far more seriously than a weak application. Under the general grounds for refusal in Part 9 of the Immigration Rules, deception can lead to a mandatory refusal and a ban on future applications lasting years. Some applicants in Bangladesh are let down by agents who supply fabricated bank statements or employment letters without the applicant fully understanding the consequences. Check every document yourself, and answer every question on the form truthfully.
Visits that look like living in the UK
Parents who visit children in the UK for six months every year, or who return shortly after a long visit, risk being treated as making the UK their main home. The rules prohibit living in the UK through frequent or successive visits. Spread visits sensibly, keep evidence of life in Bangladesh, and explain any change in pattern. If the real intention is to live with family in the UK, a visit visa is the wrong route, and other options should be considered.
Reapplying immediately with the same documents
There is no general right of appeal against the refusal of a visit visa. The usual options are a fresh application that deals with every reason given, or, in limited cases where the decision is legally flawed, judicial review. Reapplying within days with the same file usually produces the same answer and adds another refusal to your history. Our guides to visitor visa refusals and challenging a visa refusal explain the options in more detail.
The UK–Bangladesh angle
A UK visit visa from Bangladesh often sits within wider family plans. Visitors may hold property, inheritance or business interests on both sides, and decisions about one can affect the other. For example, a visit to sign documents for the sale of property in Bangladesh, or to attend a UK probate meeting, is generally a permitted visitor activity, but the supporting papers should make the purpose clear.
Documents prepared in Bangladesh must be translated for the Home Office; documents prepared in the UK for use in Bangladesh often need legalisation, which our guide to legalising UK documents for Bangladesh covers. Family members in the UK who hold both nationalities, and who often act as sponsors, can find the practical issues explained in our guide to dual nationality.
Business visitors who are planning a UK subsidiary should think ahead. Visitors may attend meetings and negotiate, but cannot run the UK business day to day. Our immigration team for Bangladeshi nationals advises on the move from visits to sponsored or founder routes.
What to do next: a checklist
- Confirm that the purpose of the trip is a permitted visitor activity and that a visit visa is the right route.
- Choose between a six-month and a long-term visa based on your travel history, not the convenience of fewer applications.
- Assemble bank records that show the source of funds, not just a balance.
- Collect evidence of employment, business, property and family ties in Bangladesh.
- Prepare the UK sponsor's invitation, status, income and accommodation evidence.
- Translate every Bengali document fully, with the translator's details.
- Disclose every previous refusal or immigration issue honestly on the form.
- Write a short cover letter that explains the trip and indexes the documents.
- If you have been refused before, address each reason in the refusal letter.

Frequently asked questions
01How much bank balance do I need for a UK visit visa from Bangladesh?
There is no fixed minimum. The rules require funds sufficient to cover all reasonable costs of the visit, including return travel, without working or using public funds. Officers judge this against your itinerary, accommodation and who is paying. What matters most is that the money is genuinely yours, or your sponsor's, and that its source is clear from your records. An unexplained large deposit can do more harm than a modest, steady balance that matches your income.
02Can my son or daughter in the UK sponsor my visit?
Yes. A relative can pay for your travel, maintenance and accommodation if they have a genuine relationship with you, are lawfully in the UK and can support you for the whole stay. They should provide an invitation letter, proof of their status, recent payslips and bank statements, and evidence of their accommodation. You still need to show your own ties to Bangladesh and your intention to return, because sponsorship does not replace the genuine visitor test.
03How long does a UK visitor visa take from Dhaka?
GOV.UK says applicants outside the UK usually get a decision within three weeks, counted from the biometrics appointment at the visa application centre. Busy periods, such as before Eid and the summer holidays, can see longer waits, and some applications need further checks. Paid faster decision services may be available. Apply as early as the rules allow, which is three months before travel, and avoid booking non-refundable flights until the visa is issued.
04Should I apply for a 2, 5 or 10 year visit visa?
Only if your travel history supports it. A long-term visit visa still limits each stay to six months and is assessed against the same genuine visitor test, but the officer considers the whole validity period. Applicants with several previous UK visits and timely returns are the strongest candidates. First-time travellers usually do better with a standard six-month visa, which costs less and builds a positive record for a later long-term application.
05What can I do if my UK visit visa is refused?
There is no general right of appeal against a visit visa refusal. Read the refusal letter carefully and identify each reason. You can make a fresh application that answers those reasons with better evidence. Where the decision is legally flawed, for example because the officer ignored key documents, judicial review may be possible, but it is time-limited and costly. Repeating the same application without changes usually leads to another refusal and weakens future applications.
06Do I need a TB test for a UK visit visa?
Only if you are visiting for more than six months, which applies mainly to medical treatment and academic visitor visas. A standard visit of up to six months does not need a TB certificate. If you do need one, it must come from a clinic approved by the Home Office. GOV.UK publishes the list of approved clinics in Bangladesh, which includes locations in Dhaka and Sylhet.
