UK Spouse Visa from Bangladesh: Documents, Money and English

Updated 21 October 2026Legal insightEngland & Wales10 min read

A UK spouse visa from Bangladesh lets the husband or wife of a British or settled person join them in the UK. The rules are the same for every nationality, but Bangladeshi couples face particular document issues: marriage registration, translations, TB testing and evidencing a relationship lived partly apart. This guide explains each requirement and the common pitfalls.

Key pointAt entry clearance, only the UK partner's income normally counts toward the £29,000 threshold. Earnings in Bangladesh and a UK job offer for the applicant generally cannot be used.

At a glance

01

£29,000 income rule

Couples usually need combined income of £29,000 a year, but at entry clearance this normally means the UK partner's income only, proved with specified documents.

02

A1 English first

The first application needs an approved English test at A1, or an English-taught degree confirmed by Ecctis; A2 is needed to extend.

03

TB test required

Applicants who have lived in Bangladesh need a TB certificate from a Home Office approved clinic before applying for a stay of six months or more.

04

Registered marriage

Muslim marriages are registered by a Nikah Registrar under the 1974 registration Act; the nikahnama and a full translation are central evidence.

05

Timing and grant

GOV.UK says overseas applications are usually decided within 12 weeks, with permission granted for up to two years and nine months.

UK spouse visa from Bangladesh: the short answer

A UK spouse visa from Bangladesh is a family visa that lets the husband or wife of a British citizen, or of someone settled in the UK, join them to live. You apply online from Bangladesh, attend a visa application centre for biometrics, and GOV.UK says overseas applications are usually decided within 12 weeks. A successful applicant receives permission for up to two years and nine months, which can then be extended.

The core requirements are the same for every nationality: a valid, recognised marriage; a genuine and subsisting relationship; a UK partner earning enough (usually £29,000 a year); adequate accommodation; and English at level A1. What differs for Bangladeshi couples is the paperwork. Marriage registration, Bengali-language documents, TB testing and proof of a relationship conducted partly at a distance all need care.

Most Bangladeshi spouse refusals are not about whether the marriage is real. They are about a document that is missing, untranslated or not in the form the rules specify.

The partner route is set out in Appendix FM to the Immigration Rules. The specific documents that prove the financial requirement are listed in Appendix FM-SE, and the evidential rules there are strict: if a specified document is missing or in the wrong form, an application can fail even where the couple in fact meet the threshold.

Who can apply

According to GOV.UK, both partners must be 18 or over, must be married or in a civil partnership recognised in the UK (or have lived together for at least two years if unmarried), and must intend to live together permanently in the UK. The rules also require that the couple have met in person. The UK partner must be a British or Irish citizen, settled in the UK, or hold certain other qualifying status.

The financial requirement

GOV.UK states that couples usually need a combined income of at least £29,000 a year. Partners extending a visa first granted before 11 April 2024 can continue to rely on the old £18,600 threshold. Cash savings can be used in place of, or alongside, income. There is no minimum income requirement where the UK partner receives certain disability or carer's benefits, but the couple must then show adequate maintenance. Full details are in our spouse visa guide.

At the entry clearance stage, the income that counts is normally the UK partner's. The Bangladeshi applicant's own earnings in Bangladesh, or a job offer in the UK, generally cannot be used for a first application, which surprises many families.

English language

The GOV.UK English guidance says the first application needs at least CEFR level A1 in speaking and listening, through an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), unless the applicant has a degree taught in English that meets the rules. A Bangladeshi degree taught in English needs an Ecctis assessment confirming it is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher. A2 is needed to extend.

Marriage registration and documents from Bangladesh

The Home Office must be satisfied that the marriage is valid and recognised in the UK. A marriage is generally recognised if it was validly celebrated under the law of the country where it took place and both parties had capacity to marry. Our guide to whether a Bangladeshi marriage is recognised in the UK explains the rules in detail.

Muslim marriages

Muslim marriages in Bangladesh are registered by a licensed Nikah Registrar under the Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act, 1974. The registered nikahnama (kabinnama) is the key document for a UK spouse visa from Bangladesh. Officers look for consistency between the nikahnama, the passports, the national identity cards and the online form. Spellings of names and dates of birth that differ between documents are a frequent source of delay.

Hindu and other marriages

For Hindu couples, registration is available under Bangladesh's Hindu marriage registration legislation, but is optional, so some marriages have only a ceremony certificate. Where there is no state registration, the couple need stronger evidence of the ceremony and the relationship. Christian and civil marriages have their own registration systems. In every case, provide the original certificate and a full English translation.

Previous marriages and divorces

If either partner was married before, the earlier marriage must have been legally ended. A talaq or other Bangladeshi divorce must be one the UK recognises, otherwise the new marriage may not be valid in UK law. This is a real risk where the UK partner pronounced talaq in the UK. Our guide to talaq recognition in the UK explains why.

Translations

Every document not in English or Welsh must have a full translation that can be independently verified, with the translator's confirmation of accuracy, the date, the translator's full name and signature, and contact details. Partial translations or summaries of Bengali documents are not enough.

Practical point

Before applying, put the nikahnama, both passports, both national ID cards, birth certificates and any divorce papers side by side and check every name, date and place. Fix inconsistencies first, through a correction at the issuing office or a sworn explanation, rather than leaving the officer to resolve them.

How a UK spouse visa from Bangladesh application works

  1. Confirm the UK partner's finances. Check which income category applies and gather the payslips, bank statements and employer letter Appendix FM-SE specifies, covering the right period.
  2. Book the English test. Take an approved SELT at A1 or higher, or obtain an Ecctis assessment of an English-taught degree.
  3. Get a TB certificate. Applicants who have lived in Bangladesh need a test at one of the Home Office approved clinics in Bangladesh.
  4. Assemble relationship evidence. Collect the nikahnama or marriage certificate, photographs, travel records showing visits, and communication history.
  5. Prepare accommodation evidence. Provide a tenancy agreement or title deed, and, where the couple will share with family, a letter from the owner and evidence the property will not be overcrowded.
  6. Translate and index. Translate all Bengali documents and prepare an indexed bundle with a cover letter.
  7. Apply online and pay. Pay the application fee and the immigration health surcharge, then book the biometrics appointment.
  8. Attend biometrics and wait. GOV.UK says overseas decisions usually take up to 12 weeks; paid priority options may be available.

Proving the relationship from a distance

Proving the relationship is often the hardest part of a UK spouse visa from Bangladesh. Many Bangladeshi couples marry in Bangladesh while the UK partner is on a visit and then spend months apart. The officer must decide whether the relationship is genuine and subsisting. That judgement is made from documents, and sometimes an interview.

Relationship evidence for Bangladeshi partner applications
Type of evidenceExamplesWhy it helps
Marriage documentsRegistered nikahnama, marriage certificate, translationsProves the legal marriage
Wedding evidencePhotographs across the events, guest attendance, venue receiptsShows a public ceremony with family involvement
VisitsPassport stamps, boarding passes, hotel bookingsShows time spent together before and after marriage
Ongoing contactCall logs, messaging history over time, money transfersShows the relationship continues during separation
Future plansTenancy in joint names, letters from family, plans for workSupports the intention to live together permanently

Quality matters more than volume. A short, representative selection of messages across the months apart is more persuasive than hundreds of screenshots. Arranged marriages are entirely acceptable; the question is whether the relationship is genuine, not how it began.

An illustrative scenario

This example is illustrative only and does not describe a real client.

A British woman of Bangladeshi heritage, working as a pharmacist in Birmingham, marries a graduate from Chattogram during a six-week visit. Her salary is above £29,000 and she has worked for the same employer for over a year. Her husband's university degree was taught in English. They plan to live with her parents until they find their own home.

The UK spouse visa from Bangladesh application includes her payslips and bank statements for the period Appendix FM-SE requires, an employer letter in the specified form, his Ecctis assessment, the nikahnama with a full translation, the TB certificate, wedding photographs, records of her return visit, and her parents' letter with the property title and a room count. The careful pairing of each requirement with its specified evidence is what matters. No outcome is guaranteed, but this is the kind of application that gives an officer no reason to refuse on paper.

Common mistakes and refusal risks

Financial documents in the wrong form or period

Appendix FM-SE lists specific documents and periods. For a salaried sponsor these typically include payslips, matching bank statements and an employer letter confirming specified details. A missing month, a letter without the required information or statements that do not show the salary credits can lead to refusal, even where the salary clearly exceeds £29,000. Check the specified evidence rules for the relevant income category before applying, not after.

Counting the wrong income

Families often assume that the Bangladeshi spouse's salary, or support from parents in the UK, can be added to meet the threshold. At entry clearance it generally cannot. Third-party support from relatives is not ordinarily counted toward the minimum income requirement either. If the UK partner's income is short, cash savings or a combination of savings and income may help, but the savings rules have their own conditions on amount, ownership and holding period.

An unrecognised earlier divorce

If either partner's previous marriage ended by a talaq pronounced in the UK, or by a divorce that did not meet the UK recognition rules, the earlier marriage may still subsist in UK law. The new marriage may then be invalid, and the application refused. This is a technical area and the facts matter: where the earlier divorce was obtained, the parties' domicile and residence, and whether notice procedures were followed. Take advice before applying if there is any doubt.

Inconsistent names and dates

Bangladeshi documents often record names with different spellings or with or without family names, and dates of birth can differ between school certificates, the national ID card and the passport. Inconsistency invites questions about identity and the genuineness of documents. Correct errors at source where possible and explain any remaining differences in the cover letter with supporting evidence.

Applying on the wrong route

Coming to the UK as a visitor and then trying to switch to a spouse visa from inside the UK is generally not permitted, and marrying in the UK requires a Marriage Visitor visa. Couples who intend to marry and settle should plan the route from the start. A failed attempt to work around the rules can damage later applications.

The UK–Bangladesh angle

A UK spouse visa from Bangladesh rarely stands alone. The couple's wider family, property and legal affairs often straddle both countries, and getting those right early avoids problems later.

Documents travel in both directions. Bangladeshi documents need translation for the Home Office, while UK documents needed in Bangladesh, such as a UK partner's divorce decree or a power of attorney for family property, often need legalisation first. Our guide to legalising UK documents for Bangladesh explains that process.

Some UK partners are dual nationals. If you hold both British and Bangladeshi citizenship, your British status is what qualifies you as a sponsor, but your Bangladeshi status can matter for travel, property and inheritance; our guide to dual nationality covers this. Couples should also consider how a marriage in Bangladesh interacts with English family law if the relationship later breaks down: questions of jurisdiction, recognition and financial claims are explained by our UK–Bangladesh family team.

Finally, families sometimes use agents in Bangladesh to prepare the application. Many are reliable, but the applicant remains responsible for every statement and document. Check the completed form and every enclosure before it is submitted; a false document submitted by an agent is treated as the applicant's own.

After arrival: extension and settlement

The first grant lasts up to two years and nine months. The couple then apply to extend for a further period, meeting the financial requirement again and showing English at A2. After five years on the route, the partner may be eligible for indefinite leave to remain. Settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027 will need English at B2 rather than B1, under a statement of changes already laid. The Home Office has also consulted on an "earned settlement" model; as of October 2026 those proposals have not been laid as rules. Our summary of the immigration White Paper changes tracks developments.

What to do next

  • Check that the marriage is registered and that any earlier divorce is recognised in the UK.
  • Confirm the UK partner's income meets £29,000 and identify the correct evidence category.
  • Book an approved English test or obtain an Ecctis assessment.
  • Arrange a TB test at an approved clinic in Bangladesh.
  • Reconcile every name, date and place across all documents.
  • Translate every Bengali document in full.
  • Assemble focused relationship and accommodation evidence.

Frequently asked questions

01How much salary does my UK spouse need to sponsor me from Bangladesh?

GOV.UK says couples usually need combined income of at least £29,000 a year. For a first application from Bangladesh, this normally means the UK partner's income, because the applicant's earnings in Bangladesh generally do not count. Partners extending a visa first granted before 11 April 2024 can rely on £18,600. Savings can be used instead of or alongside income, subject to their own rules. The requirement does not apply where the UK partner receives certain disability or carer's benefits.

02Is a Bangladeshi nikahnama accepted for a UK spouse visa?

Yes. A nikahnama registered by a licensed Nikah Registrar is the standard evidence of a Muslim marriage in Bangladesh. Provide the original or a certified copy with a full English translation that includes the translator's details and confirmation of accuracy. The officer will compare the names, dates and places with your passports and identity documents, so check for inconsistencies before applying. If either of you was married before, include evidence that the earlier marriage was legally ended.

03Which English test do I need for a spouse visa from Bangladesh?

You need an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) showing at least A1 in speaking and listening, taken with a Home Office approved provider. Approved providers operate test centres in Bangladesh; check the current GOV.UK list before booking, because only approved tests at approved centres count. If you hold a degree taught in English, you may use it instead, but a Bangladeshi degree needs an Ecctis assessment confirming it is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher.

04How long does a UK spouse visa take from Bangladesh?

GOV.UK says applications made outside the UK are usually decided within 12 weeks. The clock starts after your biometrics appointment at the visa application centre. Some cases take longer, particularly where documents need verification or the officer has questions about the relationship. Paid priority services may be available. Build the time for the TB test, English test and document translation into your plan, as these often take longer than the decision itself.

05Can my parents in the UK help with the financial requirement?

Not directly. Third-party financial support from relatives does not ordinarily count toward the minimum income requirement. Parents can provide accommodation, and their letter and property documents can help show adequate accommodation. If the UK partner's income is short, the couple may be able to use their own cash savings, alone or combined with income, subject to the specified rules on amount, ownership and the period the money has been held.

06What happens if my spouse visa from Bangladesh is refused?

A refusal of a partner application usually involves a human rights claim, which generally carries a right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal. The refusal notice will say whether you can appeal and the deadline. In many cases, a fresh application that fixes the problem, such as a missing financial document, is quicker than an appeal. Read the reasons carefully and take advice on which option suits your case.
