UK Immigration for Bangladeshi Nationals

Updated 21 October 2026Practice guideEngland & Wales11 min read

Immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals advise on visiting, studying, working, joining family and settling in the UK. Bangladeshi citizens need a visa for every UK trip, and recent reforms to Skilled Worker, English language, Graduate and settlement rules mean the right route and a complete, verifiable evidence pack matter more than ever.

Key pointMost refusals of applications from Bangladesh turn on evidence rather than eligibility: unexplained funds, unverifiable documents or missing specified financial evidence. A consistent, fully documented first application is far cheaper than any challenge.

At a glance

01

Visa needed for all visits

Bangladeshi citizens are visa nationals and must obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK, including for short tourist or business visits.

02

TB test for long stays

Applicants staying more than six months need a certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic; approved clinics operate in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet.

03

Higher Skilled Worker bar

Since July 2025 most new Skilled Worker roles must be graduate level, and from January 2026 new applicants need a higher English level.

04

Shorter Graduate route

For Graduate visa applications made from 1 January 2027, the post-study work period is reduced to 18 months for most graduates.

05

Settlement reform pending

The government has consulted on an earned settlement model with longer qualifying periods; core changes are not yet in the Immigration Rules.

What UK immigration for Bangladeshi nationals covers

Bangladesh has one of the largest diaspora communities in the United Kingdom, and every year Bangladeshi nationals apply to visit family, study, work, join a spouse, set up a business or settle permanently. immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals advise on choosing the right route, preparing an application that meets the Immigration Rules, and responding when the Home Office refuses or questions an application.

Bangladeshi citizens are visa nationals: they need entry clearance before travelling to the UK for any purpose, including short visits. Applications are made online, with biometrics given at a visa application centre in Bangladesh, and decisions are made by UK Visas and Immigration under the Immigration Rules. Successful applicants now receive an eVisa, a digital record of their status, rather than a physical document in most cases.

Immigration law changes frequently, and 2025 and 2026 brought significant reforms to work, study, English language and settlement requirements. Advice that was correct a year ago may now be wrong. This page explains the main routes and the issues that matter most for applicants from Bangladesh, and for UK families and employers sponsoring them.

TRW & Co is headquartered in Dhaka, with offices in Chattogram and Sylhet and a London office authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. As immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals, we can help applicants gather and authenticate documents in Bangladesh while handling the UK legal analysis in London.

The main routes compared

Choosing the correct route is the most important decision. Applying under the wrong category, or for a route where the applicant only just meets the criteria, is a frequent cause of refusal.

Applying from Bangladesh: the practical requirements

Tuberculosis screening

Applicants from Bangladesh coming to the UK for more than six months must obtain a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved by the Home Office. Approved clinics in Bangladesh are listed by the government and are located in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet. A certificate from any other clinic will not be accepted, and the test should be booked early because it can delay submission.

Biometrics and documents

After applying online, applicants attend a visa application centre to give fingerprints and a photograph and to submit supporting documents. Documents not in English or Welsh need certified translations. Bank statements, property records, employment letters and civil documents such as birth and marriage certificates are scrutinised closely, and the Home Office may verify them with the issuing bank or authority.

Document verification and authenticity

Refusals on the basis that a document is false, or that the applicant used deception, carry serious consequences: mandatory refusal of future applications for a period, and a lasting mark on the applicant's immigration history. immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals should check that every document is genuine, consistent and verifiable before it is submitted, and should flag gaps rather than fill them.

Visits, study and the Graduate route

Visit visa applications from Bangladesh have a significant refusal rate, often because the decision-maker is not satisfied that the applicant will leave at the end of the visit. Evidence of employment or business in Bangladesh, family ties, property, a credible itinerary and a consistent financial history all help. Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying are a common red flag. Our guide to the UK visit visa from Bangladesh covers the evidence in detail.

Students need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed sponsor, evidence of funds held for the required period, and English language ability. Sponsors apply their own checks to Bangladeshi applicants and can withdraw offers if documents raise concerns. Dependants can only accompany students on limited courses, mainly postgraduate research programmes.

The Graduate route allows students who complete an eligible UK degree to work without sponsorship for a period afterwards. For applications made from 1 January 2027, that period is being reduced to 18 months for most graduates. Students planning a long-term career in the UK should map the switch into the Skilled Worker or another route well before the Graduate visa expires.

Work routes: Skilled Worker and business visas

The Skilled Worker route remains the main path for Bangladeshi professionals. The employer must hold a sponsor licence and assign a Certificate of Sponsorship for an eligible occupation at the required salary. Following rule changes in July 2025, most new Skilled Worker roles must be at graduate level, and from January 2026 new applicants must show English at a higher level than before. Lower-skilled roles, including most new care worker recruitment from overseas, have been significantly restricted.

Salary thresholds depend on the occupation, the applicant's circumstances and whether a lower rate applies, for example to new entrants. Because thresholds are set by the Immigration Rules and change periodically, they should be checked against the current rules at the date of application.

Employers sponsoring staff from Bangladesh

A UK employer recruiting from Bangladesh takes on sponsor duties: right to work checks, record-keeping, reporting changes to UKVI, and ensuring the worker is paid and employed as stated on the Certificate of Sponsorship. The Home Office carries out compliance visits and can suspend or revoke a licence for breaches, which affects every sponsored worker. Employers that use immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals at the recruitment stage can verify qualifications and experience letters from Bangladesh before assigning a certificate, reducing the risk of a refusal or a later compliance finding.

Employers should also note that the Immigration Skills Charge and sponsor duties continue to increase. Our guides to the Skilled Worker visa from Bangladesh and getting a sponsor licence explain the employer side, and businesses expanding from Bangladesh should read our page on Bangladeshi businesses expanding to the UK.

Family and spouse visas

A British citizen or settled person can sponsor a partner from Bangladesh under Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules. The sponsor must meet a minimum income requirement, which was raised substantially in April 2024 and has since been under review, through employment, self-employment, savings or other permitted sources. The couple must show a genuine and subsisting relationship, adequate accommodation without recourse to public funds, and the applicant must meet the English language requirement.

Marriages celebrated in Bangladesh are generally recognised in the UK if they were valid where they took place and both parties had capacity. Applicants should provide the registered marriage certificate (kabin nama) and evidence of registration, alongside photographs, communications and evidence of time spent together. Questions about polygamous marriages, proxy marriages or earlier divorces need careful handling; see our guides to whether a Bangladeshi marriage is valid in the UK and the UK spouse visa from Bangladesh.

Children, parents and other relatives

Children under 18 can usually join a parent who is in the UK with a visa or settled status, provided the requirements on parental responsibility, accommodation and maintenance are met. Where only one parent is in the UK, the Rules require evidence that this parent has sole responsibility or that there are serious and compelling family reasons, which is a demanding test and needs careful evidence from Bangladesh.

Adult dependent relatives, such as elderly parents, face one of the strictest routes in the Rules: the applicant must need long-term personal care that cannot be obtained or afforded in Bangladesh. Applications that rely only on general cost or quality of care there rarely succeed. immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals will usually recommend obtaining detailed medical evidence and evidence about local care options before any application is made, and will consider whether a visit visa is the more realistic short-term solution.

Practical point

Most spouse visa refusals turn on the financial evidence. The Rules prescribe exactly which documents prove income, over which period, and in what form. Missing a single payslip or bank statement can lead to refusal even where the sponsor clearly earns enough, so check the specified evidence list before submitting.

Settlement, citizenship and dual nationality

Indefinite leave to remain is currently available after a qualifying period on many routes, commonly five years for Skilled Workers and partners. The government has consulted on an "earned settlement" model that would lengthen the standard qualifying period for most migrants and adjust it according to contribution, income, English ability and compliance. At the time of writing, the core changes have not been implemented in the Immigration Rules, and their transitional arrangements are not yet known.

Anyone on a route to settlement should keep a careful record of absences from the UK, salary, tax and any gaps in leave, because these are likely to matter under any new system. After settlement, most adults can apply for British citizenship by naturalisation once the residence and good character requirements are met.

Bangladeshi law permits dual citizenship for citizens of certain countries, including the UK, through a formal dual nationality process, so naturalising as British need not mean giving up Bangladeshi citizenship. Our guide to dual nationality for British Bangladeshis explains the steps.

In immigration cases, a complete and consistent first application is worth more than any appeal. Most refusals we see were avoidable.

The application process step by step

Whatever the route, the process followed by careful immigration solicitors for Bangladeshi nationals is broadly the same. The aim is to identify problems before the Home Office does.

  1. Route assessment. We review the applicant's circumstances, immigration history and plans, and identify the route with the strongest prospects and the best long-term path.
  2. Evidence plan. We prepare a tailored list of the documents required by the Rules and guidance, including specified financial evidence, and identify gaps early.
  3. Collection in Bangladesh. Documents are gathered, translated and checked for consistency, with TB testing booked at an approved clinic where needed.
  4. Drafting and submission. We complete the online form, prepare a representations letter addressing the key requirements and any risk factors, and submit with fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge where payable.
  5. Biometrics. The applicant attends a visa application centre to give biometrics and upload or submit documents.
  6. Decision and eVisa. Once granted, the applicant sets up their UKVI account to access their eVisa and checks the conditions and expiry dates.
  7. Refusal response. If refused, we assess whether to reapply, request administrative review, appeal where there is a right of appeal, or bring a judicial review.

Risks and common mistakes

Unexplained funds and inconsistent finances

Decision-makers look closely at bank statements from Bangladeshi banks. Large deposits shortly before an application, funds that do not match declared income, or statements that cannot be verified often lead to refusal. Funds should be held for the required period, with a clear explanation of their source supported by documents such as salary records, business accounts, land sale deeds or tax returns. Consistency across every document in the application is essential.

Using the wrong route or switching too late

Many routes cannot be switched into from inside the UK, or only under strict conditions. Visitors cannot normally switch into work or study, and Graduate visa holders need to secure sponsorship before their leave expires. Planning the route sequence at the outset, for example Student to Graduate to Skilled Worker, avoids the need to leave the UK and apply again from Bangladesh.

Previous refusals or overstaying

Every application asks about previous refusals and immigration breaches anywhere in the world. Failing to disclose them can be treated as deception, which is more damaging than the original refusal. Previous overstaying can also trigger re-entry bans depending on length and circumstances. Address earlier problems openly in the application with evidence of how circumstances have changed.

Assuming an appeal is available

Most visa refusals carry no full right of appeal. Visit, student and work refusals usually lead to administrative review, where available, or a fresh application. A right of appeal to the First-tier Tribunal generally arises only where a human rights or protection claim is refused, which commonly includes family applications. Time limits are short, so take advice immediately on receiving a refusal.

Relying on unregulated advisers

Giving immigration advice in the UK is regulated. Advisers must be authorised, for example as solicitors regulated by the SRA or through the immigration advice regulator. Unregulated agents in either country sometimes submit poor or false documents that lead to deception findings. Check your adviser's regulatory status before sharing documents or paying fees.

Frequently asked questions

01Do Bangladeshi citizens need a visa to visit the UK?

Yes. Bangladesh is on the UK's list of visa national countries, so Bangladeshi citizens need entry clearance before travelling for any purpose, including tourism, family visits and business meetings. The Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme does not replace this for visa nationals. Applications are made online and biometrics are given at a visa application centre in Bangladesh. Applicants should show a genuine purpose, enough funds and strong reasons to return, such as employment, business, family or property in Bangladesh.

02Why are UK visit visas from Bangladesh refused so often?

The most common reason is that the decision-maker is not satisfied the applicant will leave the UK at the end of the visit. This usually reflects weak or inconsistent evidence of ties to Bangladesh, unexplained deposits in bank accounts, or a history of previous refusals or overstaying. Funds should be built up over time with a documented source, and employment, business and family circumstances should be clearly evidenced. Reapplying with the same evidence rarely succeeds; address each reason given in the refusal.

03Can I bring my spouse from Bangladesh to the UK?

Yes, if you are a British citizen or settled in the UK and meet the requirements of Appendix FM. You must show a genuine and subsisting relationship, meet the minimum income requirement through permitted sources, have adequate accommodation and not rely on public funds, and your partner must meet the English language requirement. The financial evidence must be in the specified form. A marriage registered in Bangladesh is generally recognised if it was valid there and both parties had capacity to marry.

04Does my Bangladeshi employer need a sponsor licence to send me to the UK?

It depends on the route. To work for a UK company under the Skilled Worker route, the UK employer must hold a sponsor licence. If your Bangladeshi employer is setting up its first UK branch or subsidiary, you may be able to use the UK Expansion Worker visa, which still requires sponsorship through a licence held by the overseas business for that purpose. Visitors may attend meetings and negotiate deals but cannot work for a UK business. Take advice on which route fits the activity.

05Do I need a TB test for a UK visa from Bangladesh?

If you are applying to come to the UK for more than six months, yes. You must be tested at a clinic approved by the Home Office, and the government publishes the list of approved clinics in Bangladesh, which are located in Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet. A certificate from a non-approved clinic will be rejected. Visitors coming for six months or less do not need a TB test. Book early, because waiting times can delay your application.

06Will the earned settlement changes affect me?

Possibly. The government has consulted on replacing the common five-year route to indefinite leave to remain with a longer default period for most migrants, adjusted for factors such as income, contribution, English ability and compliance. Ministers have indicated the changes may apply to people already in the UK who have not yet settled, but the final rules and transitional arrangements had not been laid at the time of writing. Keep careful records of your residence, income and absences and take advice once the rules are published.

07Can I keep Bangladeshi citizenship if I become British?

The UK permits dual nationality, so it does not require you to renounce Bangladeshi citizenship when you naturalise. Bangladeshi law permits dual citizenship for citizens of certain countries, including the UK, through a formal process for obtaining a dual nationality certificate. Completing that process can matter for property ownership, inheritance and travel in Bangladesh. Check the current Bangladeshi requirements before applying, and keep your Bangladeshi documents consistent with your UK records.
